Mid-Semester Crisis

In the middle of this past semester, I found myself so busy keeping up with school, friends, boyfriend, and worrying about all of the above, that I wasn't able to take a step back and breathe! I'm one to use Instagram as a life update journal, since I really do enjoy sharing myself with those who decide they're interested in following me! Because of everything that was going on in my life, I hadn't even felt like I'd have anything to say in a life update, because I didn't KNOW what was even going on with me lol! Long story short, I finally gained some clarity and perspective, and this was my post:
Scattered Kayla Update: This week, I have been slapped in the face with the reality of how the Savior picks us up when we just give him our willing hearts, mights, minds, and souls. It’s hard! It’s hard getting out of that mid-semester slump when you’re just literally sick and tired so you’re skipping out on responsibilities and procrastinating deadlines, then just getting more behind even though you know finals draweth nigh but you feel like you’d take a W instead of settling for a mediocre final grade because the “what if calculator” is diminishing your hope? Maybe it’s just me, but I know you’re all going through something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Anyway, a huge reason it’s been easier to turn to the Savior has been the reminder of how much he wants to help me as I’ve seen all of the beautiful souls around me emulating His light and love. So if you don’t have people in your life to remind you that GOD IS GOOD, let me help you out here. “Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed.”
P.S. That last pic was our attempt at capturing Colbie Calliat in the background after we had a special interview with her and I ASKED HER A QUESTION AND she said that her favorite way to cheer herself up (not including writing songs) is to surround herself with positive people who lift her up and play with her dogs (which some may consider being the same as or better than people, right?).

The Marco Polo Application Saved My Relationships

What a week of media usage by yours truly, a millennial. Something about me is that I struggle to feel motivated to spend time on communicating with people through personal media, mainly referring to the more time-consuming ways such as texting. I've had to reanalyze my "why" of my communication with others, and I came to the conclusion that, if I choose to take time to care for people from afar, I want to make it of a higher and more enjoyable quality! So... there was the answer: THE MARCO POLO APPLICATION. You see, I noticed that I had this habit of communicating with people over text grudgingly because of the perceived burden it placed on me to express exactly what and how I wanted to through a limited means. Is that not the very stigma of media we are trying to banish from our social lives? It is indeed a bad thing to base relationships with our fellow humans on artificial fronts. So what was the miracle of the week? You guessed it... ENJOYING MORE AUTHENTIC FORMS OF ...

Welp, I completed my 7-day social media fast and it was eye-opening for SURE. Something I didn’t realize was how much I’ve relied on Facebook and Instagram to get my “social” fill, and this past week I loved how it felt to actually keep up with friends in person and be much more inclined to make new ones. I’m definitely more extroverted and than I thought I was! I also really enjoyed feeling free to incorporate more traditional types of media into my repertoire, such as more scripture reading, class readings, and especially a more focused viewing of General Conference addresses!  The messages of General Conference this past weekend reinforced this desire in me to keep seeking authenticity! Whether it be making my social life more “social”, portraying myself in the most real way possible, providing myself with more experiences with real truth and living it better, or working on having a more authentic relationship with my Heavenly Father and Savior... IT FEELS GOOD, so I’m pumped...

Two Magazine

As I've been using my roommate's desk lately, I've had her  Two Magazine, winter edition tempting me to get distracted from doing my homework. One hard study sesh, I decided to give in and spend some time flipping through the silly quizzes, date ideas, and wedding service ads. I couldn't help but think about how disappointed I was to not find very many useful things for dating and marriage in their like I have found in my classes as a Family Studies majoy. For my letter assignment, I was excited to write to The Daily Universe and give them a piece of my mind, I mean, advice.  Hello Daily Universe! My name is Kayla Moon, and I am a student of Family Studies here at BYU. Studying the topics of marriages, families, emerging adults, and dating day after day can definitely get you to think about and analyze them constantly, and especially more so being in a family and dating-centered culture such as ours. I have found your Two Magazine uniquely intere...
